CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI — The Holland Hurricanes men’s basketball team will have their share of local talent on its roster this season.

On Tuesday, the Hurricanes announced their latest recruit for the upcoming 2019-20 season, and he won’t have to go far when the new school year begins. Parker Roche, a 6’6” forward, will be joining the Hurricanes this fall as the team looks for its eighth straight Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) Championship.

Roche, a hometown product from Charlottetown, will be studying in the Sport & Leisure Management program at Holland College as he looks to pursue a career in Kinesiology when all is said and done.

“I chose Holland College because they have the program I wanted to take plus a great
basketball program. Being able to attend school while also playing collegiate basketball was very important to me.”

Roche, a former member of the PEI Under-15 and Under-17 provincial teams, a stretch that included an appearance at the Canada Games, played the past three seasons as a member of the Charlottetown Rural Raiders. This past season, he was named an all-star at provincials.

As he begins his collegiate career, Roche explains what his strengths are as a player.

“I bring the ability to stretch the floor and open up lanes for my teammates. I’m a versatile player that can play both sides of the ball, offensively and defensively.”

Head coach Josh Whitty looks forward to adding Roche to his roster this season.

“Parker brings size and a nice shooting touch to our lineup for next season. We believe he has a lot of potential and a strong work ethic. Seeing how hard he works we have no doubt that he can reach his full potential as a player with the Hurricanes.”

“Hurricanes fans can expect us to be a fast paced and hungry team this season,” added Roche.

The Hurricanes return to the court for ACAA regular season action on Saturday, November 2 when they visit the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics in Halifax. The team will host their home opener on Saturday, November 9 when they take on the University of New Brunswick-Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves.
