LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — Thursday marked the end of an era for the Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s basketball program.
After six seasons as the Head Coach of the men’s program at the University of Lethbridge, Mike Hansen has stepped down. Hansen took over the program back in 2013-14, returning to the school in which he graduated from in 1994 and played 74 games during the 1990s with the team.
“Coach Hansen’s leaving ends one of the most impressive coaching tenures here in Pronghorn Athletics,” said Executive Director of Sport and Recreation Ken McInnes, in a release posted by the Pronghorns. “Mike’s passion for the student- athletes and the love of the game were on display in everything he did.”
Hansen was named the 10th head coach in school history back on March 28th, 2013, and he helped lead the Pronghorns back to relevancy in the Canada West over his six-year tenure. Hansen compiled a head coaching record of 71-51, and he ends his career ranked second on the school’s all-time wins list (Dave Crook, 109).
Last season, the Pronghorns finished 12-8 in league play. Hansen and the Pronghorns advanced to the Canada West quarter-finals before falling to the Alberta Golden Bears in three games.
Under Hansen’s leadership, the men’s basketball team advanced to the program’s first Canada West semi-final appearance since the 2000-2001 season in 2018, falling to Alberta in two games.
“I want to thank everyone at the University of Lethbridge for the opportunities that I have been given,” added Hansen. “It was a very difficult decision to resign from coaching men’s basketball, as I truly love my players, but ultimately spending more time with my family is just too important.”
“I want to thank all of the players and assistant coaches that I have had the opportunity to coach and work with. I love all of you. Also, thank you to the many alumni that I have been able to build relationships with. Your spirit and pride in Pronghorns basketball are a huge asset to the long-term success of the program.”
Pronghorn Athletics will begin the search for a new head coach immediately. Lethbridge will begin their 2019-20 season on November 1st, 2019 against the Golden Bears.
